While there are still plenty of traditional vehicles on the roads around Union, there is an increasing number of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles. If you're exploring your options as you shop for a new vehicle, you might wonder how these are all different from each other. At Maxon Hyundai in Newark, we're used to getting questions like this, and we're always happy to explain to Jersey City customers the basics of each type of electric vehicle.
Hybrids
Hybrids feel similar to non-hybrids and require gas to power the engine. The only difference is that a hybrid powertrain is more efficient than a gas-powered engine as it uses less fuel because it also relies on a battery and an electric motor combination. The battery recharges itself when you press the brake pedal and stores power for later; thus, you don't need to plug it in for recharging—the Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra, Sonata, and Ioniq area all available as hybrids.
Plug-In Hybrids
Plug-in hybrids have gas-powered engines with electric motors and a plug-in rechargeable battery. While you drive around Elizabeth, NJ, some recharging takes place, but you'll need to plug in and recharge the battery with an approved cable and outlet to get the most out of your system. Plug-in hybrids can run exclusively on electric power for limited distances in Hudson County; otherwise, they need to use their gas-powered engines. The Ioniq, Santa Fe, and Tucson are available as plug-in hybrids.
Electric Vehicles
All-electric vehicles, which are the Kona EV, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq EV, don't use any gas, which means they produce zero emissions and are the most environmentally friendly cars. Instead, they depend on batteries and electric motors as they drive around Union. They need to be charged at residential outlets or public charging stations to run. They have good range and capability, so they're intriguing options.
