What's Expected on the 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

The Hyundai Elantra has been around for three decades as a compact car popular for a long list of standard features and a generous warranty that belies its comparatively low price point. Now, it's back-with a sportier design and more tech than ever before. The latest Hyundai Elantra, now in its seventh production cycle with the 2021 model year, is split into SE, SEL, and Limited trims.

What's New for the Hyundai Elantra in 2021?

The Elantra enters the 2021 model year with a complete redesign to usher in the nameplate's seventh generation of production.

The Elantra now uses Hyundai's "parametric dynamics" design language. The result is a longer and wider four-door vehicle that incorporates fastback and sports sedan design cues. A pair of automatic project headlights flank the chrome front grille, a pair of fold-away side mirrors are pinned to the front doors, and the vehicle rides on 15-inch steel wheels. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels go on the SEL. However, it's the Limited that gets the true exterior upgrade-with unique features such as LED headlights (instead of halogen ones), chrome window trim, heating ability, and turn-signal indicators on the side mirrors, a power sunroof, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra has two rows of cloth-trimmed seats to accommodate up to five people. The rear seats can be folded down to expand cargo space into the cabin when needed. Leather seat trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front-seat heating, and a power-adjustable driver's seat appear on the top-level Limited trim.

The powertrain on the 2021 Hyundai Elantra consists of a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission, with idle-stop technology to eliminate unnecessary fuel consumption. As a result, fuel economy is remarkable at up to an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway (on the base SE trim, due to its smaller wheels).

Driver assistance on the 2021 Hyundai Elantra comes from Hyundai's Smart Sense suite, which comprises forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, and high beam assist. Seven airbags are present for deployment if there's a crash. For max driver assistance, go with the Limited, which has adaptive cruise control, reverse parking distance warning and collision warning, highway drive assist, and an upgraded forward-collision warning system to include cyclist and junction turning detection.

For infotainment, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra provides integration with an 8-inch touchscreen, with features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, an HD Radio receiver for digital tuning, dual USB ports for charging and playing media from mobile devices, and Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming. A 4.2-inch color gauge cluster displays the vehicle's vital information, and remote keyless entry enables access with the press of the corresponding key fob button.

At the SEL trim level, automatic climate controls are extended to the front passenger (in addition to the driver's side) for individualizing heating and cooling preferences. Hyundai introduces a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, and the remote keyless entry system is upgraded to proximity keyless entry with push-button start for easier access and engine starting. The SEL gets three years of the Blue Link Connected Care (for functions to take care of the vehicles) and Remote (for remote-controlled functions).

The Limited is unique with its Hyundai Digital Key (to use your smartphone as a key), a pad for wirelessly charging mobile devices, 10.25-inch touchscreen with a voice-activated navigation system, a 10.25-inch color gauge cluster (in place of the 4.2-inch one), and an eight-speaker Bose premium audio system. In addition, Hyundai provides three years of a third Blue Link package called Guidance for geographical guidance.
