Program Overview
Hope on Wheels has been Hyundai’s signature corporate social responsibility program and the public face of Hyundai’s private commitment to fighting childhood cancer since 1998. Hope on Wheels, an independent nonprofit organization supported by the cooperative work of Hyundai Motor America (HMA) and its dealers, has donated more than $14 million dollars to fight childhood cancer since it was founded 12 years ago by a small group of New England-area Hyundai dealers. In that time there have been great strides made in the field of childhood cancer research. But despite the many advances in therapies and treatment, cancer remains the leading disease killer of America’s children. As a natural extension of Hyundai’s longstanding commitment to fighting childhood cancer, we have built our first national corporate social responsibility initiative around this issue and expanded our commitment to educate consumers about childhood cancer.
During the month of September– Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – Hyundai Motor America and its dealers will donate more than $6 million to Hope on Wheels, which will distribute the funds in the form of “Hope Grants” in the amount of $100,000 each to hospitals and other nonprofit organizations around the country that conduct childhood cancer research and/or provide support to children with cancer. We anticipate awarding at least 61 of these Hope Grants during the month of September.
Hope on Wheels will launch the national “Hyundai Gives Hope on Wheels” initiative in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, September 2. Following the launch we will embark on a national tour to award the grants to each of the at least 61 Hope Grant recipients at special award ceremony events throughout the remainder of the month. We will finish in Los Angeles, California with a final celebration the first weekend of October.
At the conclusion of the “Hyundai Gives Hope on Wheels” program, Hyundai and Hope on Wheels will have made major differences in the lives of thousands of children across the U.S. fighting cancer and established our company as one of the country’s most vocal advocates for this issue.
Funding
The program is being jointly funded by Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai dealers. In total, this campaign will generate approximately $6.1 million dollars in additional donations.
Hope Grant Review Process
With the guidance of a medical advisory committee comprised of pediatric oncologists with long-standing relationships to Hope on Wheels, the Hope on Wheels team developed a request for proposal that was distributed to 350 hospitals and organizations across the country that conduct childhood cancer research and/or provide support services and care for kids with cancer. We received more than 200 proposals for funding, and the Hope on Wheels team selected the Hope Grant recipients in conjunction with the review of the medical advisory committee and feedback from HMA executives and dealer representatives.
Local Events
The Hope on Wheels team will execute at least 61 Hope Grant award events in conjunction with each Hope Grant recipient, regional marketing managers and local dealers. We will organize all check presentation ceremonies and accompanying media and community relations activities.
Hope on Wheels will visit each Hope Grant recipient to present the check and talk with the children, families, doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers, child life specialists, counselors and other professionals that are fighting childhood cancer. At each event a video crew will gather footage, photographers will record the visits and consumers will be able to follow along at www.HyundaiHopeOnWheels.org as we feature video updates, a Twitter feed, Facebook posts and photo galleries. The Hope on Wheels team will work to involve local dealers in these visits and pitch local media whenever appropriate.
